Artist's Comments

Carlo is an awesome guy. I wanted to do some more ink/color practice and his Martian Manhunter fit the bill at the time.

Nice, see? You got the "comicy/comic look" down. Me? My attempts look more fine arts than comicy.

:( Maybe my outlines need to be bolder on J'onn..

See my work and comment if you have the time?

Hey thanks! I can't take any credit for the original lineart, that's all Carlo Barberi. I simply threw down some inks in Illustrator and colors in Photoshop.

You stuff looks good. I'd love to be able to get that painted look on some of my work, but I've spent so much time working on "cell animation" coloring that it's hard to switch gears.

(Glad that you think my stuff looks good, yours looks damn good too.)

Cell animation... whoa! *jumps up and down* you do animation? That's brilliant man! It's really tedious and all right, having to draw many of the same things over and over!

Heh, no... I don't do any animation. I meant the style of coloring I tend to use, simple highlights and shadows, not a lot of gradients.

Oh. But the less gradients, the more stark and powerful the image tends to be no?

(I reckon it's why it's the favoured style for most comic book artists)

Kinda depends on the story, I think. and for the style of the penciler. Take Ryan Ottley on Invincible, or almost any Bruce Timm work. The simple shading works well for them because the artwork itself isn't overly detailed, but it wouldn't work with someone the likes of Ethan Van Sciver or Jim Lee.

Oh my gods! Jim Lee. I admire and respect that feller deeply man.

Love his X-Men. What other comics does he do?

He did a run on Batman some time back. Currently working on All-Star Batman and Robin. Then there's all his Wildstorm work...

I really need to take a trip down to the comic store and see what's on the shelves.

(Thanks for telling me.) :)
